Frequently asked questions
What a first visit involves, what it costs, how soon you can be seen and how long care lasts — with real patients’ words alongside the answers.
01
Your first visit
Your first visit will be roughly 45-60 minutes in duration and involve the following: full medical history, orthopedic & neurologic evaluation, review of imaging (when appropriate), additional referrals & co-management (when needed), and your first homework: lifestyle changes, rehab exercises and pain education to start at home.
“Had my first initial appointment today and Dr. John Deyo has already relieved so much stiffness in my back. He was thorough in describing my problem areas and genuinely listened to my lower back issues. I am really impressed and look forward to my continued care. Highly recommend.”
Erin B. · Google reviewAlmost always, we are able to treat on the first visit. If we find any red flags during your examination or another need for a referral prior to treatment, we will let you know and schedule accordingly.
The examination comes first, and you hear what we found before anything else happens: a full medical history, an orthopedic and neurologic evaluation, and a review of imaging when it is appropriate.
We primarily use manual spinal and extremity manipulation but have additional light to medium force techniques (drop table, activator, etc.) upon request or when required. We focus on using the tools that get you better the fastest while keeping your treatment comfortable.
“Upon request” is doing real work in that sentence. If you would rather not be treated a particular way, say so — the lighter-force options exist for exactly that.
“Dr. Deyo has been my only chiropractor since I moved to Grand Rapids Michigan. She is so kind, welcoming and heard all of my concerns. She never fails to target the correct areas, when in need of a good alignment. I was nervous in signing up for chiropractic care because of all the scary stigmas there are about it but she definitely superseded all of my expectations. You will not regret having her as your chiropractor. Thank you for your great service and work.”

“Super easy booking a appointment! Rebecca was absolutely wonderful and was super informative. I am honestly excited for my next appointment!”
Maggie M. · Google reviewIt depends on which of us you are booking with and on the time of year, so we do not publish one figure that covers all four of us. The scheduler shows what is actually open.
If you can’t find a time that works, text us at (616) 747-8462 and we’ll do our best to fit you in. If we can’t, we’ll point you to someone who can.
“Can’t recommend this place enough. I was having significant back pain and they were able to get me in as a new patient the same day I called. I saw Dr Noah and felt listened to and not rushed. He made a great plan for not only how to take care of my current pain, but for stretches and exercises I can do so my back is less prone to having issues in the future. I am doing much better now after only a couple visits!”
We are at 3888 Lake Michigan Dr NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49534.

Treatment, and how long care takes
There are so many different techniques within the world of spinal manipulation. We offer the full manual style of treatment along with some other options for light-to medium pressure that are available upon request or chosen based on the examination and medical history. We always tailor treatment styles based on patient preference and what gets people better the fastest!
Main techniques offered
- Diversified/Gonstead manual
- Thompson drop table
- Activator (instrument-based)
- Active Release Technique
- Mobilization
“Dr. John checked me out and my jaw was off on the left side. He used his fancy activator adjusting tool a few times and worked magic. Apparently my jaw has been overcompensating from being out of alignment for 6+ months 😭😭 No wonder I couldn't chew or eat much of anything. Next morning, I felt 10x better, it's CRAZY!! TMJD people, go to the chiropractor. I love Westside Chiropractic 💙”
Emily M. · Google reviewWe have zero contracts, nothing paid up front. We operate no differently from your primary care or physical therapy office. Most new patients will notice improvement within 2-4 visits or 1-2 weeks. Every patient’s plan is different, but you can generally expect around 6-10 visits as part of your “active care” initially. Every 1-2 weeks, we’ll check in on your symptoms and goals, then add or remove visits based on your progress.
“Dr. Noah has significantly relieved my back pain, over just a few appointments. My shoulder and neck are improving daily. Also, he has educated me with stretches I can do at home/on my own, between appointments, to maintain the progress.”
Active care is a block of visits with a beginning and an end — around 6-10 to start, with a check-in every 1-2 weeks to decide the next step.
It is what we tell the providers who refer patients to us, too: “At the end of their treatment (6-12 visits maximum for most new patients), you will receive their last visit notes with discharge information and response to care.”
Almost every single one of our patients will receive stretches, exercises, weight training modifications, or lifestyle changes to help give you the tools that you need to be able to take control of your musculoskeletal health.
“I have been to chiropractic my whole life but stopped once becoming an adult and went off and on because I really wasn’t finding a good place that felt like they weren’t a money grab. I can’t say enough great things about westside chiro. My sister goes here as well now and we both have felt listened to, they try to find answers even if they can’t fix an issue. I also have had massage therapy and their massage therapist is so knowledgeable as well. I am so happy I have found a place that I feel like is actually helping and not requiring me to come all the time!”
You will almost certainly go home with stretches, exercise recommendations, mobility exercises and strength training for what brought you in, to help you learn how to get stronger and self-manage your aches & pains at home!
If additional rehab is necessary, we will connect you with a trusted physical therapist in our area!
“Always feel better after seeing Dr Rebecca. She explains what her adjustments are plus gives exercises to do at home to help. Very knowledgeable and caring.”
Our massage therapist, Rich Lamb, LMT, focuses on sports and medical massage with a ligament and trigger-point emphasis rather than a traditional deep-tissue massage, though he offers a variation of that too. Sessions are 25, 55 or 85 minutes, with longer sessions available on request, and are booked through the same online scheduler as chiropractic visits. If nothing there works for you, call or text us.
It books under its own massage listing on that scheduler, separate from a chiropractic visit.
“Noah Steinhauer @ Westside Chiropractic has been amazing. I haven't felt this great in a long time, not only have I received specific treatments, but the follow up exercises have been essential to getting me back to where I need to be. Also, Rich Lamb, Massage Therapist, @ Westside Chiropractic works collaboratively with the docs to provide the most knowledgeable therapeutic massages. THANK YOU WESTSIDE CHIROPRACTIC!”

Who we see, and your other providers
Yes. Parents often bring their children in, alongside their own care.
Every patient starts the same way — a full medical history and an orthopedic and neurologic evaluation — and the same rule applies afterwards: if it is not something we should be treating, we refer.
“I've been going to Rebecca for years! I've established my whole family with her and her practice. My kids and my husband see her and her husband John. She's personable, friendly, outgoing, she knows her stuff too! She will explain everything, how hard/easy an adjustment will be. She will do your extremities and joints and explain that. I've had several chiropractors over the last decade or so and she is, by far, the best (her husband is the second best chiropractor I've had)”
You can be seen through pregnancy and after it.
Treatment style is chosen with you rather than for you: alongside full manual technique there are light to medium force options — drop table, activator — available on request or chosen from the examination and medical history.
“So glad I found this place. They were able to accommodate me through my pregnancy with my back and hip pain. Definitely made a difference!”
Darcie Y. · Google reviewOne of the biggest differences you’ll notice about our practice is that we are upfront and honest about what we can and cannot help you with. This means that we’ll make sure you’re being co-managed by all of the right providers in all specialties.
If there is anything we cannot help you with, we will make sure to refer you in the right direction to a provider who can. We believe in honesty, ethics, and transparency with our patients.
“Dr Deyo is always able to help me when my neck /back need adjusting! I appreciate that she sent me to PT last year so I learned how to keep my low back strong, which means I don’t need as many adjustments. She cares about helping people stay healthy and not just repeat business.”
Jodie P. · Google reviewAfter you become a new patient, we reach out to your Primary Care Provider to let them know our plan, how you’re doing, and how you respond to treatment. We believe in having healthcare teams working together for your benefit!
“Wife turned me on to Dr Rebecca 6 months ago after great results for an additional 6 months. She has helped me with range of motion and generally less pain in my back neck and hips, and now dealing with a sciatic issue. First time service from associate Dr Noah today, and I was equally impressed with his knowledge and manipulation. Won't hesitate to return to either in the near future. Very impressed with their documentation and records keeping of patients issues and ongoing treatment, which is kind of rare we found these days with providers.”
Mike G. · Google reviewDid you know that there are guidelines and protocols that chiropractic offices are supposed to follow? Our office lines up with recommendations from the American Chiropractic Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American College of Radiology when it comes to your musculoskeletal care.
“Dr. Deyo is the best of the best! She is up to date on all the latest science and combines chiropractic care with physical therapy exercises to do at home to help improve your issues. I wouldn’t go anywhere else!”
